Set up Indigo business in Bengal and restored the fortunes of the family with the purchase and development of the estate at Rachan, Peeblesshire. Had six children with his wife Benjamina and seven children before his marriage through a liaison with Harriet Matthews in India. Disowned his first family in India in his will.
