John Tweedie (1775 - 1862) Botanist of Edinburgh and South America

John Tweedie (JJ.1796) Born c1775 in Lanarkshire *. Landscape Gardener at Eglinton Castle and at Royal Botanical Garden, Edinburgh. Emigrated with family (except eldest son William King) to Argentina and became renowned as a Botanist. Introduced many plant species to UK including Verbena and Pampas Grass. Born at Lanark in 1775. Married to Janet King/Kingo/Kingow (recorded at Dalkeith and Canongate, Edinburgh) in 1796. She died in 1832 (probably in Buenos Aires). He died 1862 at Santa Catalina, Buenos Aires aged 87 years. They had issue -

  2. Margaret Tweedie () Born 1801 at Ayr.
  3. William King Tweedie (WM.1835) Minister of the Tolbooth Kirk, one of the leaders of the Disruption in 1843 and author of a number of religious books **. Born 1803 at Ayr. Died 1863 at Edinburgh and buried in Grange Cemetery. Married Margaret Bell the daughter of Hugh Bell of Old Garphar, Straton, Ayr in 1835. She died 1885 at Edinburgh. They had issue -
    1. William Tweedie (WE.1877) Major-General, CSI (1881) and JP for Dumfries. Born 1836 at Old Macher, Aberdeen. Died 1914 at Lettrick, Dumfries, and bequeathed his Estate at Lettrick in Dunscore to the University of Edinburgh. Married Emily Harriet Whitmore the daughter of Thomas Charlton and the Lady Louisa Whitmore (nee Douglas) of Apley Park, Salop in 1877. She died . . . .. They had no issue.

* The birth of John Tweedie may be recorded at Biggar, Lanarkshire in 1777, to William Tweedie and his wife Margaret Hodges. However, his great-great-grandson John William Tweedie when claiming the right to use the Tweedie Coat of Arms said that John was the natural son of Thomas Tweedie of Oliver (died 1803).
