Robert Tweedie (1752 - 1838) of Castle Sowerby, Cumberland
Robert Tweedie (RI.1785) Born c1752 (place unknown). Farmer of six acres and sometime church Warden at Newlands, Castle Sowerby, Cumbria. Signed his name as Robert Twede. Married Isabella Johnston at Hutton in the Forest in 1785. She died at Newlands in 1807. He died at Smithfield House, Wigton (the home of his only surviving son) in 1838 aged 88 years. They had two sons and one daughter -

Joseph Tweedie (JB.1811) Victualler and Inn Keeper. Had victualler's business at Caldbeck, Cumbria and was a contemporary of John Peel the huntsman. Landlord of the New Inn (also known as Smithfield House) at Wigton in 1847. Born 1786 at Newlands, Castle Sowerby. Married Bridget Moore at Castle Sowerby in 1811. She died in 1864 and he died in 1875 aged 80 years, both at Manchester in the home of their daughter Mary Wright. They had issue;
1. Robert Tweedie (RI.1839) Ostler and Omnibus Guard at Carlisle. Born 1811 at Castle Sowerby. Married Isabella . . . in c1839. She died . . . He died 1866 at Carlisle aged 64 years. They had issue;

3. John Tweedie (Jx.1865) Born 1814 at Castle Sowerby. Living at with his parents at 26 Blackfriers St., Carlisle in 1861.
4. Joseph Tweedie (JH.1842) Railway Plate-layer on the Carlisle to Maryport railway for 45 years. Allowed the spelling of the name to become Tweddle. Lived at Bridge House and later at Parton Cottage of the east side of Wigton. Born at Newlands, Castle Sowerby in 1816. Married Hannah Moore at Thursby in 1842. She died at Parton in 1893 aged 75 years. He died at Parton in 1889 aged 74 years. They had issue;

  3. Jane Tweddle (JJ.1867) Born at Wigton in 1843. Married John Clark, an Agricultural Labourer at Wigton in 1867. They lived at Parton and have issue;

    4. Mary A. Clark () Born 1881. Married Thomas Evans.
  4. Mary Tweddle (JM.1871a) Born 1846 at Wigton. Married James Heslop at Wigton in 1871. They have issue;

  5. Edward Tweddle (Ex.1867) Railway Plate-layer. Born at Wigton in 1847. Living with his parents at Parton Cottage in 1871.
  6. William Tweddle (WM.1873) Quarryman and School Caretaker. Minister of Congregational church at Aspatria. Born 1849 at Bridge House, Wigton. Married Mary Skelton at Holm Coultram in 1873. Changed the family back from Tweddle to Tweedie in 1913. She died 1913 and he died 1921. Both buried at Aspatria Congregational ground. They had issue;
    1. Jane Tweedie () Born at Aikton, Little Bampton in 1865 out of wedlock - father unknown. Brought up by William and Mary in Aspatria.
    2. Hannah Tweedie (WH.1906) Born 1878 at Aspatria. Married William Henry Telford at Aspatria in 1906. They emigrated to Dunedin, NZ in c1922 and have issue;

    3. John William Tweedie (JK.1914) Stonemason. Left England to live in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1905. Born 1881 at Aspatria, Cumbria. See separate tree.
    4. Edward Tweedie (EA.1913) Congregational Minister at Bury Park, Luton for 25 years. Born 1883 at Aspatria, Cumbria. See separate tree.
  7. John Tweddle (Jx.1871) Born Bridge House, Wigton in 1851. Living with his parents at Parton Cottage in 1861.
  8. Joseph Tweddle () Born 1852 at Bridge House, Wigton. Probably died as an infant.
  9. Hannah Tweddle (xH.1881) Born at Wigton in 1861.Living with her parents at Parton Cottage in 1881 aged 19 years.
5. William Tweedie (WE.1842) Born at Churchtown, Caldbeck, Cumbria in 1818. Married Elizabeth Greenup at Caldbeck in 1442. She died and is buried at Caldbeck the following year aged 29 years. They had issue;

9. Thomas Tweedie (TS.1847) Agricultural Labourer. Born at Upton, Caldbeck, Cumbria in 1827. Married Sarah Dixon at Wigton in 1847. She died at Wigton in 1894 aged 67 years. He died 1886 at Garlands Asylum, Carlisle aged 55 years. They had issue;
  1. Mary Tweedie () Born at Wigton in 1847 and died the following year.
  2. John Tweedie (Jx.1869) Shoemaker. Born at Old Lane, Wigton in 1849. Living, age 41 years, with his widowed mother at 69 King Street, Wigton in 1891.
