Adam Tweedie: (c1566) of Drava. Adam Tweedie of Drava and William Tweedie of Drummelzier, on the night of 9th March 1566, under the leadership of Darnley, Morton and Ruthven, rushed into the Palace at Holyrood and in the Queen's presense assassinated David Rizzio her Foreign Secretary, favourite musician and reputed lover.



Alec Tweedie (Mrs.): (c1867 - 1940) Traveller, Artist, Author and Socialite. Prolific writer of travel books. Born Ethel Brilliana, the daughter of Dr. George Harley FRS. She married Alexander Tweedie in 1887 and lived in London. They had two sons, Harley Alexander and Leslie Kinloch. [More information]



Alexander Tweedie: (1794 - 1884) Physician and Author. FRS. Expert on fevers. Physician to the London Fever Hospital 1829.



Ernest Hastings Tweedy: (1862 - 1945) Gynaecologist. FRCPI, MD (Hon) Dublin University. Hon. Fellow Royal Academy, Ireland. Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Royal College of Surgeons. The son of John Johnston Tweedy (Solicitor) and Emily Griffith. Married 1900 to Margaret Woodhouse. No known children.



Hugh Justin Tweedie (Admiral, Sir): (1877 - 1933) Admiral in Royal Navy. Served in Mediterranean, Cape, China, West Indies and North America.



Jill Sheila Tweedie (1934 - 1993) Journalist and Author. Daughter of Patrick Graeme Tweedie and Sheila Whittall. Born in Egypt. Married (1) Bela Czirany, (2) Robert d'Ancona and (3) Alan Brien. Guardian newspaper columnist and feminist.



James Tweedie: (died 1612) Laird of Drummelzier. James was involved with the long running feud between the Tweedies and the Veitch family. The Lairds of the two families decided to settle the matter, and James was killed in the ensuing fight. This effectivly brought to an end the power of the Tweedie family in the area of Peeblesshire.



John Tweed: (1869 - 1933) Sculptor. Many works including Joseph Chamberlain bust in Westminster Abbey and Peers' War Memorial in the House of Lords.



John Tweedie: (1775 - 1862) Botanist. Gardner at Eglinton Castle and at Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh. To Buenos Aires in 1825 from where he introduced many plants to the UK including Pampas Grass and Verbena. His descendant stated that he was the illegitimate son of the Tweedies of Oliver and Quarter.



John Tweedie (Sir): (1849 - 1924) Physician. President of the Royal College of Surgeons, the Ophthalmological Society of the UK, the Medical Defence Union and many other professional associations. Emeritus Professor of Ophthalmic Medicine in Univesity College, London. Born in Stockton-on-Tees. Married Mary Hilhouse in 1885. Two sons, Roger John and Wharton Richard.



Lemuel Joseph Tweedie: (1847 - 1917) Lt. Governor General of New Brunswick from 1907. Barrister at Law. Family from Leitrim in Ireland and claimed descent from the Tweedies of Drumelzier. Son of Joseph Tweedie and Catherine McGeary. Married Agnes Loudoun in 1876 and had eight children.



Michael Forbes Tweedie: (1860 - 1938) Lawyer and Author. Founding partner of Prideaux and Tweedie, Lincoln's Inn, London. Wrote the comprehensive history of the family 'The History of the Tweedie or Tweedy Family' privately published in 1902. Son of Alexander Forbes Tweedie and Alice Bell. Married Marian Amelia C. Ellis in 1890 and had children Christian and Doyne.



Owen Meredith Tweedy: (1888 - 1960) Lecturer and Journalist. MBE. Author of 'The Dublin Tweedys'. Author of several other books. Son of Henry Colpoys Tweedy and Alice Maud Meredith. Did not marry.



Richard Twidy: (1589) of Barking, Essex. In Mexico with Sir Francis Drake, Sir John Hawkins and Sir Francis Walsingham when he claimed to have walked the 2,000 miles from Mexico to Cape Breton to be rescued.



Thomas Tweedy: Wood-carver. Believed to have lived in Durham or Northumberland area. Intricate carving of Tam O'Shanter in Robert Burn's Museum in Ayr.



Thomas Stevenson Tweedie: (1784 - 1855) Physician General of East India Company. Served East India Company from 1804 to 1844 spending majority of time in Bengal area. Set up Indigo business in Bengal and restored the fortunes of the family with the purchase and development of the estate at Rachan, Peeblesshire. Had six children with his wife Benjamina and seven childen before his marriage through a liaison with Harriet Matthews in India. Disowned his first family in India in his will. [More information]



William Tweedie (Rev., Dr.): (1821 - 1874) Temperance Campaigner and Publisher. Published numerous books on Temperance in Edinburgh and London. Later at 337 Strand, London. Chairman of Temperance Building Society from 1855 to his death. Probably born in Haddingtonshire, Scotland. Married Mary Tapper in 1848 and had children Annie Janet, George Richard and Charles Edward Scott.

William John Bell Tweedie: (1869 - 1929) Colonel, Argyll &; Sutherland Highlanders. CMG (1916); CBE (1923). Served N.W. Frontier India (1897-8) and WWI where he was wounded and mentioned in despatches. Born in Pubnah, India, the son of John Tweedie and Judith Davidson. Married Margaret Mary Moore in 1906 and had sons John William, Patrick Cecil Carus and Giles Grierson.



William King Tweedie (Rev.): (1803 - 1863) Church Reformer. Son of John Tweedie the Botanist. Minister of the Tolbooth Kirk in Edinburgh and a leader of the disruption in 1843 when the Free Church broke away from the Established Church in Scotland. [More information]



William Mansel Tweedie: (1796 - 1859) Banker. Managing partner of the Cornish Bank in Truro. Founded with L. H. Pitts, the Royal Institution of Cornwall (his portrait hangs in Truro Museum). Chairman of Cornwall Railway Company. Born in Cornwall, the son of William Tweedie and Anne Naudin. Married Jane Tanner in 1826. No children.



William Menzies Tweedie: (1826 - 1878) Portrait Painter. Paintings exhibited at Royal Academy and the Royal Scottish Academy. Pupil of Thomas Couture in Paris for three years. Born in Glasgow, the son of David Tweedie a lieutenant in the Marines.
